If DLP projectors are your thing, Toshiba’s got you covered with two new devices. The TDP-EW25 gets you a WXGA (1280 x 800) resolution, 2600 lumen, and a 2000:1 contrast ratio image, while the TDP-EX20 gets you all the same specs, albeit with a reduced resolution XGA (1024 x 768), and 2300 lumen picture. The TDP-EW25 claims a 1.2 meter throw distance (according to Toshiba, an industry first, which ain’t quite right), while the TDP-EX20 1.5m throw. Both projectors also supposedly support networked projection, but we don’t have confirmation on that, besides the translated mention of Vista and Ethernet. The TDP-EW25 goes on sale in Japan on October 25th for ¥449,400 (about $3,900 US), while its less powerful brother the TDP-EX20 will retail for ¥386,400 (about $3,400 US) when it goes on sale September 20th.

Shortly after loosing a slew of AMD-based desktops, HP and Compaq have now unleashed a trio of Pavilion and Presario laptops powered by Advanced Micro Devices. The 17-inch Pavilion dv9500z series offers up a nice selection of AMD Turion 64 X2 processors, Windows Vista, up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce Go 7150M (or optional 8400M GS), WiFi / Bluetooth, a built-in webcam and microphone, an optional Verizon Wireless V740 ExpressCard, up to 500GB of HDD storage, a dual-layer DVD writer (or a HD DVD reading drive), and an eight-cell Li-ion to boot. The slightly smaller (that’s 15.4-inches, for those keeping count) Pavilion dv6500z series offers up a fairly similar array of specs in a more compact chassis, while the lower-end 15.4-inch Compaq Presario V6500Z series steps down to an AMD Sempron and offers up less upgrades. All three units can be ordered right now through HP’s website, and while the Compaq unit starts at $499, the dv6500z and dv9500z get going at $749.99 and $999.99, respectively.

Just as HP reportedly delayed its own Windows Home Server-based device, Medion’s iteration is getting all fleshed out, so let’s get right down to the dirt, shall we? Apparently, the MD 90110 will feature an AMD Sempron 64 or Intel P4 LGA 775, an AMD RS-690 / Intel 945GC chipset, be based on a MicroATX motherboard, and include 1GB of RAM, between 500GB and 2TB of RAID storage space, an eSATA port, gigabit Ethernet, and four USB 2.0 connectors. Additionally, users can look forward to “screwless internal hard drive bays,” a recovery button, HDD status LEDs, and a variety of configurations to fit your needs (and budget). Per usual, there’s no hard data available just yet in regard to pricing or release dates, but we’ll keep you posted.

Master Control1

The only thing better than watching HD is learning how it actually works. So we took a trip down to WFTS in Tampa Florida to get schooled on what it took for them to upgrade their daily newscast to HD. And yes, we took lots of pics.

For those of you out there who are actually interested in this thing (and we know there’s a few), we’ve got some additional details and a slew of photos on the new Dell XPS M1730 that should make you very happy. The first juicy tidbit concerns the graphics chipset, which now looks like it will be two NVIDIA GeForce GO 8700M GTs coupled using SLI, which should make the performance somewhat blazing (and the temperature downright fiery), additionally, the system can / will utilize high capacity SSDs (a feature which we’ve seen in other gamer-targeted laptops lately). If you really wanna get to know the guts of this monstrosity, however, you should hit the photo gallery.

LG’s going all hoity-toity on us today with its new Design Art line of products for Europe. The hope behind the line is that “LG is now developing ‘coveted’ products, rather than just ‘needed’ products.” We’ll see how that goes for them, but there is indeed plenty to love in the lineup. The Design Art TV series looks to be similar to the Opus LCD displays we saw last month, featuring up to 10,000:1 contrast ratios and LG’s XD Engine, and of course 1080p resolutions. There’s also a full complement of home theater gear with “champagne glass” speakers and a well-styled 1080p upconverter to go along with. The LF75 LCD comes in 37-inch and 42-inch sizes, with 10,000:1 contrast, while the LB75 comes in 8,000:1 for the 32-inch and 5:000:1 for the 26-inch. You can get all of the TVs with either a red or black support “ring.” Prices range from 1,000 to 2,000 Euros ($1,364 to $2,728 US), no word on when they’ll hit the market.

LG is touting its fancy new Digital Fine Contrast tech today, which gives it a new “world’s highest” contrast ratio, at 5000:1. And who are we go argue with numbers like those? LG is planning to implement the tech into all of its monitors, except for the M8W, L18, L196WS and Fantasy Series. Along with the existing displays getting the DFC boost, LG has two new displays sporting the tech: the 20-inch USB-based L206WU pictured — which showed up in the States last month — and the 22-inch L227WT. The latter display includes Wide Color Gamut tech for showing off 100 percent of the NTSC spectrum, and a 2ms response time. The L206WU will be out globally in October, while the L227WT will hit the scene in November. No word on prices.

GameTap shines a light in the shadows and finds the thief Garrett hiding there with the list of new games for the service this week. The highlight, of course, is Garrett’s final adventure in Thief: Deadly Shadows. Considering Garrett is currently unemployed since Ion Storm has ceased to be and Eidos hasn’t mentioned any new games, maybe we can hire him to find documentation on what GameTap’s endgame is with all their recent writer hires? Anyway, new games for the week are:

Thief: Deadly Shadows (PC) - Garrett finds himself pulled into a sandbox-style adventure revolving around the Last Glyph. This stealth game depends on your standard fare of getting through missions without killing anyone … because you’re a thief, not a Hitman.
Delta Force Xtreme (PC) - It’s all the fun of Delta Force, but, you know, to the extreme … sorry, X-treme!
Delta Force Task Force Dagger (PC) - Less “xtreme,” but a perfectly fine tactical shooter. Infiltrate enemy compounds as a member of one of many elite agency or military groups.
Hospital Tycoon (PC) - Run a hospital responsibly and just try not to get sued. Like any other tycoon game, be as fiscally responsible as possible and just grow your hospital.
Praetorians (PC) - It’s like Rome: Total War … but not.
Championship Wrestling (C64) - Two pixelated blobs in spandex enter a ring — one pixelated blob leaves.

After the break we have GameTap’s updated list of free games. For those looking to get their old-school groove on they’ve added Elevator Action to the list, along with six other games.

Ever since I’ve started using Linux I’ve been obsessed with doing custom routers and trying to cram as much functionality in the less amount of space possible. ‘Space’ so far being hard drive space, so I set out to build me a new router to substitute the old P5-233 Dell that was working as my firewall. Like pretty much every other hardware project I’ve done, planning was absent in the process as I prefer to do things McGyver-style and surprise myself.
